What Are Crackle Beads?

Crackle beads—also called crack beads, crack design beads, or cracking beads—are decorative beads created with an internal shattered-glass effect. This effect gives them a sparkling, ice-like appearance that catches light beautifully.

How They Get Their Cracked-Glass Effect

The signature look is produced through a heat-cooling process:

  1. The bead material (usually glass or acrylic) is heated to a high temperature.
  2. It is then rapidly cooled.
  3. The sudden temperature change causes the interior of the bead to crack while the outer surface remains smooth and intact.

This internal cracking reflects light at different angles, giving crackle beads their signature brilliance.

The Science Behind the Effect

The rapid thermal shock creates micro-fractures inside the bead. These fractures trap and refract light—making every bead shine differently. No two crackle beads are identical, which is part of their charm.
